The 2024 Michigan nursing license renewal requirements exist for good reason. Our nurses must keep up as best practices evolve, so they are empowered to provide the highest level of care for their patients.

However, we know you are facing burnout, staffing shortages and the high demands of a complex healthcare system. Nursing CE Central offers quick, effective courses that earn Michigan nursing CEUs.

If you miss your license renewal deadline, you have 60 days to renew it without having to go through the relicensure process.

1. What are the CE requirements for the 2024 Michigan nursing license renewal period?

Michigan LPNs, RNs, and APRNs must complete 25 contact hours of continuing education in order to renew their nursing licenses. Two hours must be on pain and symptom management, one hour must be on human trafficking (one-time requirement), and one hour must cover implicit bias training. (Nursing CE Central provides the implicit bias training webinar in our bundle.)

Nursing CE Central’s Renewal Bundle includes LPN license renewal CE and RN license renewal CE.

Certified Registered Nurse Anethetists who hold a controlled substance license must complete an opioids and controlled substance awareness course (one-time requirement).

Nursing CE Central’s APRN Bundle includes APRN license renewal CE.

Additionally, the Michigan Board of Nursing requires that no more than 12 continuing education units be completed during any given 24-hour period. This means most nurses will need a minimum of three days to complete their nursing CE course requirements for renewal.

2. Is Nursing CE Central a Michigan Board of Nursing-approved provider?

Yes.

3. How can I renew a nursing license online this year?

Michigan nurses can renew their license online through the MiPLUS renewal portal.

4. What happens if a nurse doesn’t renew their license before it expires?

Michigan nurses have a 60-day grace period if they miss their renewal deadline. During that time, they they can renew their license without going through the relicensure process. However, the grace period comes with an additional $20 late fee.

If a nurse does not renew either during their regular renewal period or the 60-day grace period, a relicensure is required. Unlike the regular renewal process, relicensure requires that a nurse submit proof of completed continuing education requirements and pay an additional $70 to $100 in renewal fees.

5. How can I renew my license during this grace period?

The BON sends out reminders 90 days prior to expiration, but you can still renew your license online during the 60-day grace period by logging into the MiPLUS renewal portal.

RN or LPN renewals costs $131, or $161.40 for an RN with Specialty renewal. A $20 late fee is applied if you renew within the 60-day grace period. Relicensure is $228.80, valid for two years. Payment must be made via credit or debit card. Visa, Mastercard, Discover. American Express is not accepted.

6. Can I still work or practice if I miss the Michigan nursing license renewal deadline?

No. You cannot practice until your license is active. If you practice with a lapsed or expired license you may be subject to penalty fees.

7. What do I need to have be ready when renewing my nursing license online?

Most nurses will only need fulfilled continuing education requirements and a valid method of payment. Payment with a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover credit or debit card is required. American Express is not accepted.

8. Can I renew now, and complete my CEUs later?

No. The BON requires that all nursing continuing education requirements be met at the time of renewing a nursing license. You must attest to having fulfilled all continuing education requirements before the final submission of your online renewal form.

9. How can I check that my Michigan nursing license renewal application is complete?

Verification that your Michigan nursing license renewal is complete will be available through the MiPLUS portal roughly 24 hours after submitting your renewal application. You can find this verification under the ‘Home’ tab of the MiPLUS portal by selecting the ‘My Records’ subtab and confirming that a new expiration date is listed next to licensing information. Nursing license lookups can be completed on the license verification page.

10. How long should I keep documentation proving I completed my 2024 CE requirements for renewal?

The board does not require nurses to submit proof of completion of continuing education during the regular Michigan nursing license renewal process. However, nurses are required to maintain their own records of CE completion for a minimum of four years.

The Board conducts random audits after each renewal period, where randomly selected nurses will be notified that they must submit evidence of having earned their required renewal CEs. This evidence regularly comes in the form of CE certificate copies.
