The word “triage” is derived from the French verb “to sort,” and that is exactly how it is interpreted in medicine today. When looking at the emergency department (ED), the goal of triaging is to identify resources that do the most good for the largest number of ill and injured patients. As EDs have become busier over time, this skill has become a critical piece of providing the highest and most efficient level of care possible; especially with pediatric populations who are not as readily able to voice their symptoms. Learning the cues of specific illnesses, understanding age-specific considerations, and implementing pediatric-specific tools are essential in accurately determining the required level of care and interventions needed in an expeditious manner.
