Course Overview

Managing Surgical Site Infections

Author: Elizabeth Walters
DNP, CPNP, RN

Surgical site infections are a problem today. While many facilities have implemented successful strategies to reduce the number of surgical site infections, the problem still leads to significant morbidity and death, particularly as antimicrobial resistance is on the rise. Some risk factors for surgical site infections are non-modifiable. However, many are modifiable. Proper management of a surgical site infection involves prevention, detailed wound assessment, excellent wound care practices, and optimal patient education. This course, designed for nurses at all levels and specialties, will describe the extent of the problem and various strategies for care management.
