Course Overview

Diabetic Ketoacidosis Management

Author: Maureen Sullivan-Tevault
RN, BSN, CEN, CDCES

Cases of diabetes mellitus continue to steadily increase throughout the world, and approximately 1.5 million deaths are directly attributed to diabetes annually. (1) Diabetes ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening complication of uncontrolled diabetes, requires prompt recognition and emergency management to reduce long term complications. Diabetes ketoacidosis is, however, preventable in the majority of cases, and ongoing patient and family education and support lower the rates of occurrence and severity of complications.
