Working in hospice can be a very rewarding experience for nurses. Working in this specialty requires a certain kind of nurse. Hospice nurses are compassionate, empathetic, and supportive of both patients and their families. Hospice nurses spend much of their time not only providing physical care for others, but also providing emotional support.
But what about the hospice nurse? Who is there to support them as they grieve the loss of their patients repeatedly?
Exposure to death, dying, and suffering is a normal part of the job. The nature of hospice plus the need to suppress emotions may cause hospice nurses to experience compassion fatigue. Nurses that experience compassion fatigue run the risk of leaving a profession that they once found enjoyable and fulfilling.
Fortunately, there are measures to help prevent this from occurring. If compassion fatigue is recognized and steps are taken to reduce its risk, a hospice nurse can look forward to a long, rewarding career.
